New Member of the Family

For about two weeks now we've been living with a new addition, Kora, an apparent lab-terrier mix. Lab is obvious, terrier if guess.

Upon our return from Croatia, we (a lot of Jenn) proceeded to look for a rescue puppy. After a little bit of turmoil, no response for a puppy from one organization (OK, that was the only turmoil) we came upon a litter of puppies that were found in a box, in a gravel pit, one can only assume that they were left to die.
So, we (Jenn) made an impassioned plea on email and phone since we were not "awarded" the other puppies (from Iran). Turns out the head of the rescue society was on holidays - we had to wait again for a response.

After the wait though, we were asked if we wanted to come visit the puppies. We drove out to Abbotsford, met "Sugar"and another puppy we were interested in. This other puppy was already spoken for but Kora (a.k.a. Sugar) was not. We were immediately drawn to her and were then allowed to come get her after her shots and being spayed.

Now we have a little terror (terrier? The words' similarities are eerie...) in our house! She is good most of the time actually, mixed in with bouts of willfulness and complete madness! At these times she pretty much looks like the Tasmanian Devil on Looney Toons, a whirling dervish of fiery energy. We can't wait to have her interact with other dogs so that she can bite with wild abandon and be bitten back!
We got a call yesterday from another rescue organization, the one with the Iranian lab-saluki mixes asking if we were still interested. (Apparently salukis can run up to 60 kph!) We were a little taken aback, we thought we were left behind and had second thoughts after a crazy couple of hours with Kora. This is not a tale of buyers remorse though, I leave that to Michael. We love our little furball and would never part with her. (though we are going to get a Newfie in the future so Kora has a buddy...just don't tell Jenn!).
No, not buyers remorse. What comes with this tale is what Paul Harvey would call "the rest of the story" (remember those radio segments?) The lady from the one rescue organization who we didn't deal with knew the man who found our pup and her mates. He worked at the gravel pit and was relieving himself at some spot when he heard some whining. He investigated and found six puppies in a box. I don't know at what point two of the puppies died. The puppies were so flea-ridden they were covered with blood-oozing sores. The man who found them had picked the puppies up and cradling them, comforting them. After his shirt was covered in puppy blood...

Kora has not had the easiest time since then. After a couple of days we rewarded Kora with some couch snuggling. Jenn found a squiggling worm on her hand...and after some research we determined it was a tapeworm. The only way to get tapeworms is by eating an animal that has tapeworms or by eating fleas... Turns out the deworming medication the shelter gave does not get rid of tapeworms. Which upset me quite a bit because the vet the shelter used should have known there was the possibility, really good possibility, the dogs would have tapeworms because they were covered in fleas when they were found! That has since been remedied by us. No squiggling egg sacs coming out of Kora's butt now! Also, tapeworms don't have to be worked out, they just dissolve inside the intestines.

Then, oddly, after meeting Steven, she developed a cough. Well to us it sounded like she was trying to throw up but she was just coughing so much she almost threw up at the end. again, back to the vet, now she of on antibiotics, though they don't think it is kennel cough.

Too bad Brumby wasn't still around, Kora could have had a playmate!
